COMMENT: Beach House -EN ROUTE – St. Helena, Island to Ascension Island – Day 02 – 175 nm

Got a bit breezy last night so we\’re under full main and genoa poled out to windward. It is predicted to back off a bit and if so we\’ll stay with
this sail plan. If not, we\’ll take in a reef. Yesterday we saw a \”Sei Whale\” about 100 feet from the boat. It just seemed as curious about us as we about it.
Also, several very large white dolphins were tagging along with the whale! Our best run yet today at 175 miles, much more Miss Piggy like…
KIT, Hope to be in on Friday during the day to Ascension Island.

A lovely steady wind and sea. Not too much, not too little. This is the passage the magazines write about.

The blog is updated and as soon as web guru Jeremiah figures out why the photos won\’t post, they too will be up.
We had a great time at St. Helena Island. The tour of the Napoleon sites, the hospitality of the warm people were all great.
We have lovely conditions and expect this to be the case all the way to Ascension Island. The journey is 700 miles, it will be our shortest of three jumps
across the Atlantic to the South American side. We expect the trip to take 4-5 days, the winds 12-20 knots and pretty much right behind us. The seas and swell shouldn\’t be uncomfortable…we\’re off this morning at 0900 (both local and GMT!).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SKYE!!! (She\’s catching up to us!…:-))

The trip took exactly 8 days 8 hours, 1340 rhumb line miles. We\’re safely snugged on a mooring with some locals
who asked if they could come out in the dark and windy night and help us!
They also had three babies in the dinghy with them. Only on St. Elsewhere…:-)

We\’ll update the blog in the morning. Crew is showering and bed!…

COMMENT: Beach House -EN ROUTE – Namibia to St. Helena Island – Day 8 – 177 nm

Yesterday started a bit slow for the first 10 hours, but after that, things gotta\’ rockin\’..
We\’ve surfed as high as 14 knots.

Looking at the weather files, the guru\’s said 15-20 knots. I said, more like 25++
I was right. We went to the second reef right at dark and the staysail on the pole to windward.
The squalls hit us and we had 42 knots for 10 minutes before it backed off to the mid 30\’s…
It\’s calmed a bit in the last 10 hours, but still the odd 30 knot reading pops up.
We\’re 86 miles from the NE end of the island and will likely be in just after dark.
We have good info provided by \”Sunflower\” for the approach, so we may get to sleep on a mooring tonight.
Trip feels a bit like coming out of New Zealand….big swells!…The odd 4 meter ones are now common.
    KIT,
    We\’ll report our arrival.

Our best day\’s run so far. We\’re sailing with a reef in the main and the staysail. A bit boisterous out here now.
Steering working fine, but the rudder still slips a little on the starboard side. Refrigerator continues to work on the manual
thermostat. We\’ll gybe sometime within the next 24 hours and perhaps even in an hour the way the wind is shifting to the East.

We expect to see the island well before dark tomorrow and hope to sneak in before sunset? But, it may or may not happen.

If the current wind holds this speed for the day, tomorrow we\’ll most likely stretch out the distance.
The winds will be somewhat steady until this p.m. then down a bit before finally just building up well into the 20+ knot range the day or two
before our planned arrival at St. Helena. We should be there on Sunday night or Monday morning if all goes as expected.

The sea state has certainly picked up and we\’ve a pretty good size swell from the SW. Nothing to worry about, just we\’re a bit less comfy than those nice first
slow days. Ah the \”good old days\”….:-)

Good day all! The blog is posted at: www.svbeachhouse.com
We did 162 nm yesterday, but mostly motoring!
Expect the winds to start by this evening. We\’re just at the half way mark to St. Helena,
725 miles to go. We\’ll most likely be there on Monday…but it\’s still just an educated guess.
