COMMENT: Beach House – ANCHORED – Middle of Caicos Bank, Turks & Caicos

We\’re doing the trip across the Caicos Bank. This is the third most natural site remarked upon by the Astronauts from outer space.
It\’s 60 miles x 30 miles across. The bottom is mostly all white sand and it\’s 5-20 feet deep. We\’re anchored in 10 feet of water. It\’s \”gin clear\”
and we\’ve had a swim. Water temp is 82 deg F, 27.8 C. It\’s so calm out here, it\’s looks like the worlds largest natural swimming pool. The Bahamas Banks are however similar and larger!…Yet to come. Winlink had a problem over the weekend and so we could not post this till today. Two more position reports to follow.

COMMENT: Beach House – ANCHORED – Lee of Long Cay, South Caicos Island – Turks & Caicos

Started out as a windy sail, then the wind started to slack as was predicted. This is a very unusual mix.
To the north look like there is a HUGE mega resort, but here in the harbor area; it\’s a sleepy little village.
We\’re anchored in 5-6 feet of \”gin clear\” water. Pretty nice behind Long Cay. The rest of the harbor is bumpy due to the wind
and swell direction. Tomorrow we may try the 47 mile trip across the very shallow \”Caicos Bank\”. More on that later!

COMMENT: Beach House – ANCHORED – Cockburn Town, Grand Turk Island – Turks and Caicos

Checked in with Customs and Immigration at South Dock. A bit of a \”recky\” to find them, but fortunately, we got two good dudes!
The South Dock area is a ZOO with the Cruise Ship folks. Nothing to a crowd in less than an hour. We\’re inside the shallow reef off Cockburn Town (Capitol)
of both the Turks and Caicos. These islands are called \”Turks\” as there is a cactus here that has an annual red flower. It has a tassle and looks just like
a \”Fez\” (or) a Turks Hat. Hence the name. Caicos is (they think, but are not sure) a variant pronunciation of the word \”Cay\” (which no mater how it\’s spelled is pronounced \”Key\”). We\’ll go and explore and the water here is not just warm but absolutely….\”Gin Clear\”…:-)

P.S. I think yesterday\’s blog did not post right and I\’ll see if I can find wifi and post it ashore.

It was a lovely sail. We slowed last night to arrive after sunrise. We are the ONLY private boat here.
\”Carnival Liberty\” is coming in and will be docking. This should be exciting. The water 200 yds offshore is over 2000 feet deep.
at 100 yards it\’s 60 feet!..Very interesting. We\’re in 14 feet, nice sand. We\’ll go check in after a short nap.

We had a nice trip from Fajardo to San Juan. It\’s quite dramatic coming in the entrance with the old fort.
We\’ll do a \”Segue\” tour tomorrow of the old city. We walked it two days ago when we came here by car.
From here, we\’ll most likely do a 2 day sail to the Turks and Caicos.

We left the lovely island of Culebrita this morning and investigated several nice coves along the way.
Fueled up on the mainland of Puerto Rico and then discovered the very nice Marina at Puerto del Rey. (Sounds almost like home!)
We\’ll stay a few days, rent a car, drive to San Juan and decide when and where we\’re going next.

We went to the airport at Culebra and checked in with customs. Bought our annual entry decal for US waters.
It\’s sort of weird here. It\’s difficult to tell if this is the US (US Customs are here), but hey!…we\’re in Puerto Rico.
This anchorage is very calm and pretty. We\’ll explore tomorrow.

We did the \”Bio-Luminesent Tour\” last night. It was a bit under whelming, but fun nonetheless.
We\’ve motored over to Vieques\’ northern sister island – Culebra. Has world renowned beaches, nice anchorages.
Looks a bit like the Vava\’u Group in Tonga mixed in with the lovely reefs of the French Society Islands.

COMMENT: Beach House – ANCHORED – Esperanza, Isla de Vieques (US Territory)

We read the interesting beach signs and anchor buoys last night, warning us about \”unexploded ordinance\”.
Vieques until 2001 was used as a US Military firing range (but only the east side). 99% of it\’s been checked and cleared,
    but hey…gotta look anyway!

We motored up to the main town of Esperanza this morning and were met by a Wisconsin \”ex pat\” who came aboard and gave us the low down on the entire island.
We\’ll do the \”bio-luminescence tour\” this evening and see what we\’ll do from there. The \”bio tour\” is a bay that apparently we kayak in in clear bottom boats
and the underwater light show begins! We\’ll update you.
